The digitising project

The State Library of Victoria, in collaboration with the Australian Science and Technology Heritage Centre (AUSTEHC), is creating a digital database of 21,500 patent applications lodged in Victoria from 1854 to 1904. Subsequently, the original copies of all these patent applications will be digitised, providing over 100,000 images over the Web.

As the first stage of this exciting project, a fully searchable index to patents applied for in 1875, together with scanned images of twelve patents from that year, is now available on the Internet.

The State Library of Victoria is seeking sponsorship to complete the digitisation of this significant archival collection of primary resource material. It will be of substantial interest and benefit to researchers, teachers, students, restorers, museum curators, archivists, local historians and genealogists.

If you are interested in finding out more information about sponsoring this major project, please contact David Yandell, Project Manager, Victorian Patents and Patentees 1854-1904 Project, State Library of Victoria on (03) 9669 9602 or patents@slv.vic.gov.au.
